DENTAL IMPLANT

DENTAL IMPLANTS ARE THE MODERN REPLACEMENT SOLUTION FOR MISSING TEETH.

WHAT ARE DENTAL IMPLANTS?

Dental implants are generally considered the ideal standard in tooth replacement, and most dentists would select this treatment option for their own mouth. A small, titanium dental implant is placed in the jaw bone by the Oral Surgeon. After a period of 3 months, during which the implant integrates/fuses with the surrounding bone, the general dentist can proceed with making the crown (tooth portion) which will attach to the top of the implant. Implants can also be used to support other restorations such as bridges (multiple teeth), or dentures. They are very strong and have excellent longevity.

HOW DO IMPLANTS WORK?

CONSULTATION AND TREATMENT PLANNING

The process of replacing your tooth begins with a consultation. Digital imaging is done and medical and dental histories are completed to make sure we have a complete picture of your current health. We will explore treatment options with you and make a plan that meets both your health goals and budgetary needs.

Many patients request to have their dental implant placed on the same day immediately following their consultation, which we are often able to accommodate.

EXTRACTION

We may be able to place the new implant at the same time as tooth removal, but some cases require bone grafting prior to implant placement.

BONE GRAFTING

If your jawbone lacks the bony support to immediately place an implant, a bone graft will be performed. Bone grafting is quite common and a procedure that is usually followed by several months of healing prior to implant placement.

IMPLANT SURGERY

A titanium screw is placed and then a period of three months is needed for the osseointegration (the process of the implant fusing to the bone) to take place.

FINAL RESTORATION

Once the implant is fully fused to the bone the final restoration will be done by your general dentist. We will do a three month follow-up to ensure the implant area is healthy and ready for that process to begin.
